Put simply, a bail bond is a contract that guarantees the court that a defendant will appear for future court dates. If the defendant fails to appear at future court dates, the bail is paid in full to the court. Bail bonds allow the defendent to stay out of jail until their court case is over.
What is a Cosigner?
A cosigner (aka a guarantor or indemnitor) is someone who takes financial responsibility for the bail bond if the defendant fails to appear in court.
What do I Need to Bail Someone out of Jail?
You need the bail fee, a cosigner, and possibly some form of collateral.
What is Collateral?
Collateral is money, property, or other items of significant value held while the accused is out on bail. The collateral is returned when the defendant has settled the case.
How Much Does it Cost?
A “premium” (typically 10% of the amount of the bond) is the amount paid to a bail bond company for the services and financial risks assumed by the bail bonds company.
